The first week of doing anything is usually filled with excitement and intention. I tend to be overzealous and perfectionistic, so I always intend on doing everything I say by the book, no exceptions.
And of course, this always means that when I falter, it’s a process of feeling worthless, followed by awareness that I’m being critical of myself, and ending up in forgiveness.
That’s why this week, I am choosing to be kind to myself because I did not sit down and meditate once. Not at all. Haha!
Part of why I chose this as my behavior change is that I lost this practice when I started to teach yoga full time. As my career elevated, my schedule changed, thus resulting in less time for myself and more time for my students. By the time I would get home at night, as is the usual story, I would be tired and wanting nothing to do with sitting down and breathing any more than I already had been for the previous three or four hours of classes.
However, it’s the very practice of meditation that led me to embrace the changes in myself which would ultimately propel me to wanting to teach yoga and meditation.
It seems a little hypocritical to me that a teacher would not continue to practice the very things she’s so passionate about that she would quit her engineering career of six years to engage in full time. Hence why I am determined, even if it’s not this week, but next week, to return back to the practice that has led me to the home of my heart so many times.
